The battle for a Free Ireland has spanned hundreds of years and is marked by many historic conflicts. Probably the best known of these battles is The Easter Rising of April 1916. On April 24th, 1916; Irish patriots took to the streets and confronted their British occupiers before surrendering on April 29, 1916. This bloody conflict was the catalyst that created modern Ireland. The 100th year anniversary of this pitched battle is in 2016 and the country has events planned to help tourists and locals relive the day and appreciate the impact of the combatants sacrifice. If you are coming to Ireland in March or April – you will have all kinds of opportunities to join in commemorations of The Easter Rebellion.
